If
you are just starting out in your career as a tractor trailer driver, thinking
about becoming a tractor trailer career driver, or you are an experienced OTR
driver looking for another company, the first decision you should make is to decide
who is going to best represent your career interests. Is it better to go through
a company recruiter who represents only one company, or should you use the services
of an unbiased independent firm that essentially represents the trucking industry
as a whole. Today's savvy CDL Class A truck drivers recognize the important differences
between using a captive company recruiter versus using the services of a company
like Trucking Careers of America, and how these differences favorably impact their
truck driving career.

Plan for the Old Man"Read
BigRigRick's blog about how he came full circle and back to his 40 year old plan
to become an OTR driver. Read about everything that led up to the day when he
got on the bus and left for training, and how he chronicles each day's training
activities since then. "I
looked into getting the CDL through ATI ... they're local, & the course was
8 4-day weeks long, but the $6,300 was insane ... Read

A
trucking company recruiter is an employee and represents one company. His responsibility
is to recruit drivers from various sources to work for that company. As an employee
he or she is very restricted as to the information they are allowed to disclose
to recruits; they are trained to present their company in a particular way. This
Could Happen to You ....
We
regularly receive phone calls and e-mails from OTR drivers who worked with an
in-house recruiter, went to work for that recruiter's company, and too late discovered
that what they had been told was not the reality of things, especially when it
comes to potential income and hometime. They are either stuck in a bad situation
for some time to come, or out of work; back where they started and looking for
a trucking job, again. Often they must pay back their former employer for the
monies that the company spent training them, which can be in the thousands of
dollars. We also regularly
hear from drivers who thought they were hired by a company, arrived at a training
center or orientation, only to find out several days later that they were being
sent home because their paperwork was not in order, the background check was not
complete, or something required further investigation. These drivers for the most
part must pay their own way home and the majority of them, for various reasons,
do not return. There Is a Better

... Being a
professional OTR truck driver can be an exciting and rewarding career, however,
it can also be difficult in that critical first year. The
company a student or recent graduate initially goes to work for can often make
or break a budding tractor trailer driver's career.
Over the years we
have worked with several thousand drivers and positioned them to enjoy a successful
career. We've learned which companies
to avoid and which companies to work for, and are in tune with the industry's
ever-changing climate. There is a lot
of good, bad and ugly in the trucking industry and no matter what your level of
CDL experience is, you have to be careful with your decisions. There are many
independent CDL schools and trucking companies that should be avoided. There
Are (2) Types of Trucking Companies those
that hire only experienced drivers
those
that hire recent graduates and/or offer company sponsored training **
**
There are many companies whose business model for CDL students and CDL recent
graduates is to continually create driver turnover because it is more cost effective.
A high percentage of drivers don't make it through their first year with these
companies because they didn't expect such hard work, low pay, little home time,
lack of professional respect and questionable business practices. We know
and avoid these companies ...

Planning Your OTR Career - The BIG Picture
If
you are truly committed to being a professional long-term OTR driver, you need
a career plan. You need a coach or an advisor - someone who knows the industry
well. You need someone who is in your corner, someone who is objective and unbiased,
someone who is focused more on helping you to establish or elevate your career
than to just recruit numbers ... So,
let's discuss The BIG Picture .... how you're going to arrive at
what we call the 'promised land'... what you need to do to go from being a first
year 'beginner' with a company that only hires students and/or recent graduates
to becoming a seasoned one-year OTR veteran who is hired by one of the 'good companies'
that hires only experienced CDL drivers. We
work with you to learn what your short-term and long-term goals are, we discuss
options with you and make recommendations, and together we design your OTR Career
Plan. Depending on your CDL status and experience, we plan that you:
are always fully informed
are committed to becoming a professional OTR trucker
are prepared to begin training or orientation
understand what to expect and what is expected of you
receive excellent training or orientation
acquire 12 months OTR experience
will go to work with one of the 'good companies' **
** These 'good companies' often know their OTR drivers by their first names and
they place a high value on their drivers. They pay their drivers well, usually
between $1,200 - $1,400 weekly, have regional and/or dedicated jobs, will treat
you as a professional and with respect and offer excellent home time. The
magic in this industry is to have a minimum of (1) year of OTR driving experience
and a clean record. However, should you
have less than one year's OTR experience and want to make an 'interim' move, options
are available and we can put the next step of your career plan into action. There
is no way around it - you have to pay your dues to earn the right to move up the
career ladder as an experienced CDL driver. No matter how hard it is, get that
first year of driving experience behind you ! Then, as an OTR experienced driver,
a world of opportunities will be open to you... There's
an Old and Wise Motto...And
it goes something like "if you don't know much about a particular subject
surround yourself with people who do know a lot about that particular subject".
Doesn't it make more sense to utilize the services of a company like TCA whose
knowledge and experience is industry-based than to work with one or more individuals
whose knowledge and experience is company-based? Did we mention that there is
